Odoo 20: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Every year Odoo ships a major new version, and the next one, Odoo 20, is already generating a lot of questions from clients. Here is a grounded look at what we actually know, what to expect, and how to prepare, without the hype.

First, an honest caveat

Odoo 20 has not been released yet. It is expected to be unveiled at Odoo Experience 2026, Odoo’s annual conference in Brussels, scheduled for 24 to 26 September 2026, with general availability following in the weeks after.

Everything below is based on the official roadmap that Odoo presented in April 2026, plus the clear direction of recent releases. Odoo itself cheerfully describes its roadmap as “a list of things we will maybe do,” so treat specific features as likely, not guaranteed, until launch day.

The big theme: AI woven into the work

If Odoo 18 and 19 sprinkled AI in, Odoo 20’s stated ambition is to make AI an assistance layer across the whole platform, not a bolt-on chatbot in one corner.

The direction being discussed is task-level AI that can actually do things inside your business: draft, check and act, with the human staying in control. Think less “ask a question, get an answer” and more “here is a task, let AI handle the first pass.” The goal Odoo keeps repeating is simpler, more intuitive, more automated.

Features being talked about

From the roadmap and Odoo’s recent trajectory, these are the areas getting attention. Again, expect movement before the final release:

  • Accounting: an AI-assisted audit to catch anomalies, and more direct payment handling from inside Odoo.
  • Payroll: a simpler, dashboard-driven flow that reduces manual work entries.
  • Point of Sale: easier hardware setup and smarter product combos.
  • Mobile: a purpose-built mobile experience with clearer, touch-friendly screens.
  • Platform: deeper automation across modules, and infrastructure work aimed at larger, higher-load deployments.

The through-line is friction reduction for everyday users, rather than more knobs for power users.

What this means for your business

A new version is exciting, but the smart question is not “what is new,” it is “what is new for me.” A few practical points:

  • You do not have to upgrade on day one. New major versions mature over the following months. For anything running real operations, waiting for the first stable patches is the sensible play.
  • Custom modules and integrations need testing. If you have custom development, third-party apps or a multi-company setup, budget time to test them against the new version before you commit.
  • AI features are a tool, not a strategy. The value comes from pointing them at a real, specific task, not from turning everything on at once.

How to prepare now

You do not need to wait for launch to get ready:

  1. Know your current version and edition. Clarity on where you are today makes any upgrade path simpler.
  2. List your customizations and integrations. This is the part that makes or breaks an upgrade.
  3. Keep configurations clean. The tidier your current setup, the smoother the move.
  4. Pick your moment. Plan the upgrade for a quiet business period, not your busiest month.

My take

Odoo 20 looks like a genuine step in a clear direction: AI that assists inside real workflows, and a platform that keeps trying to remove friction. That is a good direction. But the fundamentals of a successful upgrade have not changed. Understand what you run, test your customizations, wait for stability, and move deliberately.

If you are on an older Odoo version and wondering whether and when to move, that is exactly the kind of planning I help with. Happy to map out a sensible path when the time is right.
