How to Choose the Right ERP Partner

Here is something I tell every client: choosing your ERP partner matters more than choosing the ERP itself. The software is capable either way. Whether your project succeeds usually comes down to the people who implement it. So how do you pick well?

Why the partner matters more than the software

Modern ERP platforms are all genuinely good. The difference between a smooth rollout and a painful one is rarely the product. It is whether your partner understands your business, plans properly, and sticks around when things get tricky. A great partner makes an average tool shine. A poor one can sink even the best software.

What a good partner actually does

Look for someone who does more than install software:

  • Understands your business first. They ask about how you work before they talk about features.
  • Advises honestly. They tell you when a customization is a bad idea, or when standard features will do the job.
  • Plans in phases. They protect a lean first phase instead of promising everything at once.
  • Trains your people. They set your team up to run the system, not to depend on the partner forever.
  • Stays for go-live and beyond. They are there for the tricky first weeks, not gone at handover.

Questions that reveal a good fit

Before you commit, ask:

  • “Tell me about a project like mine. What went wrong, and how did you handle it?” Honest answers beat a flawless sales pitch.
  • “Who exactly will work on my project?” You want to meet the real team, not just the salesperson.
  • “How do you handle scope changes and extra costs?” Clarity here saves arguments later.
  • “What happens after go-live?” Support, response times and ongoing help should be spelled out.
  • “Can I speak to a past client?” A confident partner will happily connect you.

Warning signs to walk away from

  • They talk features before they understand your problems.
  • They say yes to everything and promise unrealistic timelines.
  • The price looks too good to be true, with vague scope behind it.
  • They push heavy customization when standard features would do.
  • You cannot get a straight answer on who supports you after launch.

Do not choose on price alone

A low day rate is tempting, but ERP is where cheap gets expensive. Mistakes, rework and a stalled project cost far more than the difference in rate. Weigh value, fit and track record, then let price be one factor among several, not the deciding one.

My take

The best ERP partner is a guide, not just a supplier. They understand your business, tell you the truth, plan sensibly and stay with you through go-live. Get the partner right and the software mostly takes care of itself. Get it wrong and no product will save the project.

If you are weighing up ERP partners and want a second opinion on fit, I am happy to help you ask the right questions.
