Odoo 20 Migration: Should You Upgrade, and When?
Every time Odoo ships a new version, I get the same question: should we upgrade? With Odoo 20 arriving, it is worth answering properly. A new release is exciting, but “should we move, and when” deserves more thought than “yes, it is new.” Here is how I would decide.

The honest timing picture
Odoo 20 is expected to launch at Odoo Experience 2026 in late September, with general availability in the weeks after. So nobody is upgrading production to it this minute. The real questions are whether it is right for you at all, and how soon after release you should move.
Why not to rush in on day one
It is tempting to jump on the newest version immediately. Usually, do not. Here is why:
- Maturity. Any major release settles over its first weeks and months as early issues are found and patched.
- Third-party apps need to catch up. The apps and connectors you rely on have to confirm they work on the new version, and that takes a little time after launch.
- Your customizations need adapting. Custom modules do not migrate themselves, so you want a stable target to build against, not a moving one.
For anything running real operations, letting the first stable patches land is simply the sensible play.
Why not to fall too far behind either
The opposite mistake is staying on an old version for years. That carries its own cost:
- Odoo actively supports roughly its most recent major versions, so older releases gradually age out of official support and fixes.
- The longer you wait, the bigger the eventual jump, and big jumps are harder than steady steps.
- You miss genuine improvements in usability, features and security that newer versions bring.
The goal is not “always newest” or “never change.” It is staying on a supported, stable version without chasing every release on launch day.
Questions that decide it for you
- How old is your current version? If you are several versions behind and nearing the edge of support, upgrading matters more and sooner.
- Do you rely on custom modules or third-party apps? If yes, wait until they are confirmed compatible, and budget time to adapt your own code.
- Do you actually need something in Odoo 20? A specific new feature that solves a real problem is a good reason. “It is the latest” is not.
- What does your calendar allow? Upgrades belong in quiet periods, never in your busiest season.
A sensible approach
For most businesses, the pattern that works is this: get ready now, then move a little after release rather than on day one. Prepare your customization list, watch for the first stable patches, confirm your critical apps are compatible, pick a quiet window, and upgrade on a tested copy before you touch production. Deliberate beats rushed every time.
My take
Upgrading to Odoo 20 is a good idea for most businesses eventually, but rarely on launch day. Do not rush in before it settles, and do not fall so far behind that support and complexity pile up. Decide based on how old your version is, what you depend on, and whether Odoo 20 solves a real problem for you. Then move on your terms, not the release calendar’s.
