Inventory Adjustments and Cycle Counts in Odoo
However good your system is, physical stock and system stock drift apart over time: miscounts, breakages, unrecorded movements. Inventory adjustments are how you bring them back in line, and cycle counts are how you do it without shutting down once a year. Here is how Odoo handles both.
What an inventory adjustment is
An inventory adjustment is simply telling Odoo the real, counted quantity of a product at a location. If the system says 100 and you count 96, you record 96, and Odoo posts the difference. The stock figure is corrected, and the change is captured rather than hidden.
Because Odoo values your stock, an adjustment also flows through to the accounts through an inventory loss or gain, so your books stay honest too.
The trouble with the annual stocktake
Many businesses count everything once a year in one exhausting exercise, often stopping operations to do it. It is disruptive, error-prone when rushed, and it means errors can sit undetected for months before you catch them.
Cycle counting: little and often
The smarter approach Odoo supports is cycle counting: counting a portion of your stock regularly, so over time everything gets counted without a single big freeze.
Usually you count your most important or fastest-moving items more often, and slower items less often. The benefits are real:
- Errors are caught quickly, not months later.
- No need to halt the whole operation.
- Counting becomes a routine habit instead of a dreaded event.
- Your data stays continuously trustworthy.
Making counts reliable
A few habits keep adjustments meaningful:
- Count in a calm, consistent way, ideally when stock is not moving.
- Investigate big discrepancies rather than just overwriting them; the cause often matters.
- Prioritise high-value and high-movement items for frequent counts.
- Use the accuracy you build to trust your system for planning and promising to customers.
My take
Inventory accuracy is not a once-a-year project, it is a habit. Use adjustments to correct reality when you find it, and cycle counts to find it continuously. Count little and often, focus on what matters most, and your stock figures become numbers you can actually rely on, which is the whole point of an inventory system.
