Project Management in Odoo: Tasks, Stages and Delivery

Delivering work on time and on budget is hard when tasks live in heads, chats and scattered lists. Odoo Project brings structure to how work gets done. This starts a short series on Odoo Services and Project.

Projects and tasks

The basics are simple: you create a project, and within it, tasks, the individual pieces of work that need doing. Each task can have an owner, a deadline, a description and everything needed to get it done. Nothing important lives only in someone’s memory.

A visual pipeline of work

Like the CRM pipeline, Odoo Project uses a visual board of stages, for example To Do, In Progress, Review and Done. You drag tasks across as they progress, so in one glance the whole team sees what is being worked on, what is stuck, and what is finished.

Clear ownership and deadlines

Work slips when it is not clear who owns what and by when. Odoo makes both explicit: every task has an assignee and a due date, so responsibility is unambiguous and deadlines are visible. That alone prevents a lot of things falling through the cracks.

Collaboration in one place

Discussion, files and updates can live on the task itself, so the context travels with the work. Instead of hunting through chat and email for that one decision, everything about a task is in one place, which makes handovers and catching up far easier.

Connected to the rest of the business

Because Project sits in Odoo, it connects to timesheets, billing and more. Work done on a project can be tracked and, where relevant, billed, without re-entering anything. We will build on that later in the series.

Practical tips

  • Break projects into clear, owned tasks with realistic deadlines.
  • Use stages that match how your team actually works.
  • Keep discussion and files on the task, so context is not lost.
  • Review the board regularly so nothing stalls unnoticed.

My take

Odoo Project turns vague intentions into visible, owned, trackable work. The value is clarity: everyone knows what needs doing, who owns it and where it stands. Get that right, and delivery becomes calmer and more predictable, which is what good project management is really about.

Next in the series: tracking the time that work takes with Timesheets.
