Point of Sale in Odoo: Selling in Person, Connected to Everything

The main Odoo guide series covered the core apps. This starts a new run looking at more of Odoo’s apps, beginning with one that matters to any business selling face to face: Point of Sale.

Selling at the counter

Point of Sale, or POS, is the app for selling in person, at a shop counter, a restaurant, a market stall or a pop-up. It gives you a fast, touch-friendly screen to ring up sales, take payment and hand over a receipt. The interface is built for speed, because at a busy counter every second counts.

The same products and stock

Here is the Odoo difference. The products you sell at the till are the same products in your inventory. When you sell something at the counter, it comes off the same stock as your online and other sales. There is no separate till system to reconcile; the shop floor and the stockroom are one.

Works even when the internet drops

A counter cannot stop selling because the connection did. Odoo POS is designed to keep working offline and sync when the connection returns, so a shaky network does not stop you taking money. That reliability matters in the real world of retail and hospitality.

Payments and receipts

POS handles the payment methods your customers use, cash, card and more, and produces receipts. Because it is Odoo, those sales flow into your accounting, so the day’s takings are recorded without a separate end-of-day re-entry.

One view across every channel

With POS, online and other sales all in Odoo, you get one true picture: total sales, total stock, one set of customers. A shop that also sells online no longer runs two disconnected businesses; it runs one, seen clearly.

Practical tips

  • Sell from the same catalog and stock as your other channels.
  • Rely on offline capability so a network blip never stops a sale.
  • Let POS sales flow into accounting rather than reconciling separately.
  • Use the single view of stock and sales across counter and online.

My take

Point of Sale turns in-person selling into part of your one connected system rather than an island. Fast at the counter, reliable when the network is not, and joined up with stock and accounts, it means a shop and its back office finally speak the same language. For any business selling face to face, that connection is the real win.
