Odoo Activities: Never Drop a Follow-Up Again

The difference between a deal that closes and one that goes cold is often just the follow-up that nobody made. Odoo Activities exist to make sure the next step never gets forgotten. Continuing this run through more Odoo apps, here is Activities.

The next step, attached to the record

An activity is a scheduled action, a call, an email, a meeting, a to-do, attached to a specific record: an opportunity, a customer, an invoice, a task. Instead of the next step living in someone’s memory, it sits on the record with a date and an owner, so it is visible and it is owned.

Everywhere in the system

Activities are not a separate app so much as a feature that runs through the whole of Odoo. Almost any record can carry activities, which is why they are so useful. Wherever work needs a follow-up, you schedule it right there, and it turns up when it is due.

A clear view of what is due

Because activities have dates and owners, you get a clear picture of what needs doing and when. Overdue items stand out, so nothing quietly slips. For a salesperson working a pipeline or a manager watching a team, that visibility is the whole value.

Planned actions, not vague intentions

The strength of activities is that they turn a vague intention, “I should follow up with them”, into a concrete, scheduled action with a date attached. That small shift is what stops good intentions from evaporating, and it is remarkably effective in practice.

Part of the connected system

Activities tie planning to the actual work, because they live on the records the work concerns. Your follow-ups are not in a separate planner disconnected from the deal or the customer; they are right there on it, part of the same connected system as everything else.

Practical tips

  • Schedule the next step as an activity the moment you finish the current one.
  • Give every activity a clear owner and a realistic due date.
  • Watch overdue activities as a warning sign, especially in your pipeline.
  • Use them everywhere; almost any record can carry a follow-up.

My take

Activities may be the most quietly valuable feature in all of Odoo. By turning every “I must follow up” into a dated, owned action sitting on the right record, they close the gap where so much work goes to die. Simple, everywhere, and genuinely the difference between things getting done and things getting forgotten.

Next in this run: getting your data in and out with Odoo import and export.
