How to Set Up Your Chart of Accounts in Odoo
The chart of accounts is the backbone of your accounting: every transaction lands in one of its accounts, and every financial report is built from it. Setting it up well is one of the most important early accounting tasks. Continuing this series of practical Odoo how-to guides, here is the chart of accounts.
Start from the local template
Odoo provides a chart of accounts template for most countries, built to match local accounting standards. Start from that rather than building from scratch, because it gives you a compliant, sensible structure out of the box. You then adapt it to your business rather than inventing the whole thing yourself.
Understand the account types
Accounts fall into types: assets, liabilities, equity, income and expenses. These types are what let Odoo produce the balance sheet and profit and loss correctly. You do not need to be an accountant to set up Odoo, but understanding that each account has a type, and that the type drives the reports, helps everything make sense.
Adapt it to your business
The template is a starting point, not a straitjacket. Add the accounts your business genuinely needs to see separately, and avoid adding ones you do not. Too few accounts and you cannot see detail; too many and reporting becomes noise. Aim for the level of detail that actually informs your decisions.
Involve your accountant
This is the one area where it really pays to involve your accountant early. They know what your business and your jurisdiction need, and getting the structure right with them up front is far easier than reworking it later. A short conversation now saves a painful restructuring after you have months of data posted.
Get it right before posting
Reworking a chart of accounts once transactions are posted against it is genuinely hard. So treat the setup as something to get right before you start entering real data. Time spent here is some of the best-spent time in the whole accounting setup, because everything downstream depends on it.
Practical tips
- Start from Odoo’s local chart of accounts template, not a blank slate.
- Understand that each account’s type drives your financial reports.
- Adapt the template to the detail your business actually needs.
- Involve your accountant early to get the structure right.
- Finalise it before posting real transactions; reworking later is hard.
My take
The chart of accounts rewards care up front more than almost any other accounting setup, because it is the foundation every report is built on and it is painful to change later. Start from the local template, adapt it thoughtfully with your accountant, and get it right before you post real data. Do that and your financial reporting is trustworthy from the very first month.
